Roof of main airport rips open as water comes gushing by way of and vacationers run for canopy

The roof of a major airport ripped open as water came gushing through and tourists ran for cover.

Water came flooding through a gaping hole in the roof of the international airport in Indonesia. It came after days of torrential rain. Shocked witnesses captured the dramatic moment as they were waiting for their flights, with the ceiling completely tearing open.

The stream of water hits the seating area and a TV in Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport lounge on April 6. The cladding then flaps from the ceiling as the cascade of water continues to drown the airport. Ankle-deep water is then seen flooding the area by the boarding gates.

Some passengers panicked as debris fell from the roof as they were waiting to board their flights. Officials said 12 flights were diverted as a result of severe weather while another 28 were disrupted. A spokesperson for the airport said: “The condition of the disturbance at one point of the roof lasted for about 5 minutes.”

Authorities said airport operations continued running safely and the clean up was quick. “Airport operational officers immediately handled it, including cleaning and restricting the affected area, so that the condition can be immediately controlled,” the spokesperson added.

It comes after a major UK airport was evacuated after as officials confirmed an incident occurred in the terminal’s baggage reclaim and immigration area.

Multiple fire crews are reportedly on the scene as hundreds of passengers have been forced to wait outside due on April 7 to “safety”.

Multiple images have been posted online showing passengers waiting outside the terminal building as emergency crews investigate the area.

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said the evacuation was made as a “precaution” with no reports of flames or injuries.

The incident occurred in the North Terminal with West Midlands Fire Control confirming a domestic fire alarm has been activated in the baggage and immigration area.

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident affecting baggage reclaim and immigration in the North Terminal.

“We are working with emergency partners and as a precaution, passengers have been evacuated from this area only.

“The safety of our people and passengers is our number one priority and further updates will be provided.”
