NEED TO KNOW: Baby dies after ‘eating insects’ in squalid home as mum charged with child cruelty

  • A one-year-old baby died after eating ants and cockroaches when left in squalid conditions by his mum for 12 hours, police say.
  • Sherry Magby, 37, left the tragic tot at home in Atlanta, Georgia with five siblings aged between two and 10. She has been charged with six counts of second-degree cruelty to children after the house was found in “total disarray” with a “strong, foul smell”.
  • Police said the eldest child, aged 10, told them the baby had eaten insects because there was “insufficient food” in the home. The youngster was left to supervise his younger siblings while their mother was away.
  • Officers were called to the house in late March following reports of a cardiac arrest. They discovered the children had been left without adequate food or suitable living conditions.
  • A neighbour said she often saw the children playing outside late at night without their mother. She told local media: “If I knew they didn’t have food to eat, I would have fed them. It’s just sad, you know, that kids that small have to live like that.”
  • Magby is being held without bond and authorities suggest additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
