Dim JD Sports robber walked into department in stolen tracksuit and will get caught when he units off alarm
Bradley Carney’s stolen Hugo Boss gear still had a security tag on it when he walked into Middlesbrough branch to try and steal more, the 28-year-old already had a criminal history
A robber targeted two JD Sports branches on the same day – and came a cropper. Bradley Carney, 28, immediately put on his stolen Hugo Boss gear after fleeing the first store in Teesside Park on November 4.
Carney and an accomplice drove then straight to a second JD Sports branch, in Skippers Lane in Middlesbrough. They then tried to steal more stock. But Durham Crown Court has heard that Bradley had a security tag on his clothes, which set off an alarm as he walked in.
“He asked staff if he was banned” Jonathan Gittins, prosecuting, told the court on Wednesday (March 8). “And referred to the incident on Teesside Park”.
Staff at the second store had already been alerted to the robbery.
Carney got hold of more clothes and tried to walk out with them, but staff were able to get hold of the stock and the police were called. The duo worked together to steal £500 of clothes from the Teesside Park branch – before fleeing in a car.
Carney was arrested two days later. He pleaded guilty to robbery and attempted theft, at an earlier court hearing.
In 2020, he was jailed for 56 months, after he burst into a family home in Hemlington, armed with a white wooden pole and a broken bottle. Carney’s accomplice demanded cash, but Carney ended up hiding in the kitchen when the mother got her dog.
Lee Goodchild, mitigating, said that his client had been drinking and taking drugs when he carried out his latest offences. He said: “His probation report finds he is a gentleman who is polite when not on drugs.
“He’s pleasant to deal with.” Carney’s father added: “Has his own gym and teaches boxing.
“He intends to take Bradley under his wing and get him exercising, to occupy his mind”. Mr Goodchild asked Judge Richard Bennett to consider a community order or a suspended sentence.
But the judge told Carney: “During the robbery of JD Sports at Teesside Park, your accomplice forced his way out of the shop. You blocked staff from stopping him.
“At the branch on Skippers Lane, you referred to the incident on Teesside Park and tried to leave the store with clothing. You had the brass neck to try and steal again after your robbery.
“You led a law-abiding life until 2019, when you started to take cocaine. It may be on the next occasion, you are looking at a very significant sentence indeed”.
Carney, of Larkspur Road in Marton, Middlesbrough, was jailed for 22 months.
