Car crashes into busy JD Gym in Bury as horrified folks scream ‘transfer, transfer’

Video footage has captured scenes of mayhem after a vehicle ploughed into a packed JD gym in Bury on Tuesday (April 14). Emergency services including ambulance crews and firefighters rushed to the incident at the Angouleme retail park.
Dramatic clips from within the facility, shared with the Manchester Evening News, depicted debris and masonry tumbling into the crowded gym while members were exercising. The car’s bonnet had become lodged in the wall as patrons rapidly evacuated the premises.
Voices could be heard yelling “move, move!” in the immediate aftermath of the crash, with sirens also wailing in the background. The fitness centre was compelled to shut following the devastating impact.
One gentleman, aged in his 60s, was utilising the equipment when the vehicle struck and sustained injuries. He was transported to hospital where his condition is not considered life-threatening, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Extensive cordoning was established, with the gym temporarily shuttered due to the structural damage. A scene was visible around the car park with the motor embedded in the exterior wall.
The motorist, a woman in her 40s, was extracted from the vehicle by fire personnel and also suffered injuries. She remains hospitalised and has additionally been detained on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving, officers have confirmed. A statement released by Greater Manchester Police read: “Officers responded to an incident at 4.45pm today (14/04/2026) at JD Gym on George Street, Bury, with the assistance of NWAS and the Greater Manchester Fire Service. It was reported that a car had driven through the wall of JD Gym, resulting in structural damage of the building.
“In the incident a man in his 60’s has been struck by the car while inside the gym and has sustained non-life changing injuries. Woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving, she remains in hospital at this time. A cordon remained in position for several hours with Rochdale Road sealed off alongside the retail park car park. The motor involved stayed lodged in the wall and was being examined by structural engineers.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 5pm on Tuesday 14 April, fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on George Street, Bury.
“Two fire engines from Bury and Whitefield stations, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton, were quickly mobilised to the incident, which involved a car colliding with a commercial building.
“Firefighters extricated a woman from the car, while another man inside the building was injured in the collision. Both were treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital by North West Ambulance Service.
“Fire crews remain in attendance, working with Greater Manchester Police and the local council’s building inspection team to make the area safe.”
