Ex-detective instructed lady she was ‘too delicate’ after intercourse toy assault, trial hears

An ex-female detective has been accused of attacking another woman with a sex toy and then calling the alleged victim ‘too sensitive’ after the incident

A former female detective inspector told a woman she was “too sensitive” after allegedly attacking her with a sex toy, a court heard.

Claudine Binns, 52, who worked in Bradford, West Yorkshire, has denied charges of assault by penetration and attempted assault by penetration following an encounter in 2022. Prosecutors say the pair had consensual sex before things took a sinister turn – with the alleged victim also claiming she may also have been drugged.

Giving evidence in a video interview played to the trial at Bradford Crown Court, the woman said Binns took out a sex toy during their first night together. She told jurors Binns later tried to use it on her despite her objections and became “annoyed” when she protested.

The following night, after the pair had been drinking, the alleged victim said she went to sleep only to realise Binns was preparing to use the toy again. She claims Binns told her: “Come on, I’m not finished with you yet.” In footage shown to the court, the woman said Binns added: “You’re going to like this, trust me.”

Prosecutor Philip Standfast said: “The defendant pushed [the victim] on to her front [and] lifted her up by her hips.” The complainant said she screamed out in pain, telling Binns: “You’ve got to get off me. You’ve got to stop.”

The alleged victim said she was too scared to move in case the item penetrated her further. Jurors heard the alleged assault lasted “three to four seconds” before Binns is said to have removed the item before “slamming it down on the bedroom floor” with “a thud.”

The woman later described a “niggling pain” along with a burning sensation that lasted for days. She told police she believed she had been injured by the alleged attack, describing the act as “unnatural” and insisting she had not consented. In the aftermath, the complainant claimed Binns turned on her – telling her she had “a f***-up little mind” and that she was “too sensitive for her own good.”

The court heard the woman tried to raise what had happened the following morning, but alleged Binns “deflected and diverted away from the subject.”

In another claim the complainant told police she believed she may have been spiked with the date rape drug Rohypnol during the same weekend.

The woman said she and Binns had been drinking at Binns’ home in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, when she began to feel “really emotional, sick, and very drunk.” Describing her condition she said she was dizzy and swaying like she was “ridiculously drunk.”

She added the intensity of the symptoms did not match how much alcohol she had consumed. The woman told officers: “I believe that she drugged me.” However she later accepted she could not be certain, telling the court: “I accept that I may not have been.”

In cross-examination, defence barrister Rhodri James suggested the allegation had been fabricated. He told her she had not been drugged “at any stage” and had “just chosen to make it up.”

She replied: “I did not. I took into consideration that I may have been drugged at some point in that weekend.” Mr James asked: “Is this just an example of you trying to get her into more trouble?”

The woman responded: “I know what she did to me.” Jurors were also shown messages between the pair sent before the alleged incidents, in which they expressed excitement about meeting up.

But the complainant said the messages masked Binns’ true nature, claiming she had been pressurised into sexual activity “that I absolutely did not consent to.”

West Yorkshire Police previously confirmed Binns was serving as a detective inspector in the Bradford district at the time of her arrest in May 2022. The alleged offences are said to have taken place while she was off duty. She was suspended from the force and has since retired. The trial continues.
