Telford gas tanker hearth sparks college evacuation as youngsters heard ‘screaming’

A major blaze in Telford has sparked a nearby primary and school to be evacuated after fuel tanker caught fire. Locals reported hearing multiple “explosions” as some compared the sound as “like a bomb”.
Newdale Primary School and nursery was evacuated as as pupils were moved to a safe location while parents were notified of the incident.
One woman, speaking to the Shropshire Star, recalled how she heard a “big sound like a bomb.”
She told the publication: “I ran out to see what happened and I could also hear noise from the school, the children screaming.”
West Mercia Police are currently advising people to avoid the area while fire crews respond to the incident.
A spokesperson said: “Emergency services are currently responding to a fuel tanker fire in Newdale, Telford. Police were called to the area of Marlborough Way around 12.05pm due to reports of a fire.
“Officers are asking people to avoid the area. We will provide more information as soon as we are able to do so. “
