Liverpool information: Hugo Ekitike harm hits switch plans as goal has ‘door open’ to maneuver

Liverpool suffered a brutal blow in their Champions League defeat to PSG as striker Hugo Ekitike suffered a horrendous injury that could have major ramifications for transfers

Liverpool’s torturous campaign continues to deteriorate with Hugo Ekitike becoming the latest casualty of a dismal season.

The Reds were eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday following their 2-0 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, completing a crushing 4-0 aggregate loss to the European champions. To make things even worse, French forward Ekitike was carried off on a stretcher during the first half with an Achilles problem.

Not only has this ruled him out for the rest of this campaign and the World Cup with France this summer, but he is also expected to spend much of next season out of action. Under fire manager Arne Slot has already addressed the club’s potential activity, which will now no doubt be impacted by the 23-year-old striker’s long term injury. Here’s all the latest news from Anfield.

Arne Slot acknowledges challenge

Describing the club as undergoing “transition”, Slot conceded after the PSG defeat that losing Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson on free transfers this summer will compound the task he faces to get the club back to challenging for and winning titles, reports the Mirror.

He told Prime Video: “Now we are losing Mo and Andy Robertson on a free transfer as we lost Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and this model of the club means we need to sell, usually, to buy. So it’s a big challenge. It was already last season. It’s going to be a challenge in the summer again.

“This club has also shown many times that this model works and we can be very successful with his model,” Slot added.

Tuesday’s defeat confirmed the Dutchman’s second season at Anfield will conclude without any silverware, but he chose to remain optimistic about his team’s future.

He further commented: “I think we have signed very good and talented players. Now let’s hope they are all fit. That most of them go into their second season in the Premier League.

“As I’ve said many times, the future looks really good, especially if we can add a few good signings after the players leaving this summer.”

Anthony Gordon move

Liverpool have previously been linked with a move for Anthony Gordon, with the former Everton man impressing for both Newcastle United and England in the past year.

With Slot on the lookout for more options to bolster his forward line, GiveMeSport claim the Reds “remain interested” in the 25-year-old winger, who has bagged 17 goals in 45 games so far this season.

That’s because an exit could be on the cards, with Fabrizio Romano explaining on his YouTube channel that the Magpies may be open to a sale because of their financial position.

He said: “There is a possibility Newcastle sell one or two top players in the summer transfer window. It’s about Financial Fair Play, it’s about the cost of the squad, so they have to consider exits.

“So Anthony Gordon has chances to leave Newcastle in the summer transfer window… There are several clubs interested. I would not underestimate Premier League clubs in this race for Anthony Gordon, in case there is a door open to his exit in the summer, but Bayern [Munich] are looking at wingers in the market.”

Scouse star Gordon is a boyhood Liverpool fan and it was reported Newcastle offered him for sale to Liverpool in the summer of 2024.
