A major airport will be closing next week for more than a month, with all scheduled flights cancelled and Brits affected.

Santiago de Compostela Airport in northwest Spain will close from April 23 to May 27 for multi-million-pound maintenance work.

The entire airport will be closed to air traffic during this time with no take-offs or landings taking place. Thousands of Brits could be impacted.

There are usually 30 flights from the UK to Santiago de Compostela Airport each week including from airports London Stansted, London Gatwick and London Heathrow. Airlines include Vueling, Ryanair, Iberia and British Airways.

Each aircraft will usually hold an average of 180 passengers so with 30 flights a week, around 5,400 Brits could be impacted by the cancellations. The other routes from the airport mainly include other spots in Spain such as Barcelona and Madrid.

In a statement on the Spanish airport operator’s website, Aena, it says the airport “will be closed from 23 April to 27 May 2026 for runway resurfacing works”.

“During this period, the airport will be closed to all air traffic, and no takeoffs or landings will take place,” the statement read.

“If you have any questions about your flight status, schedule changes, or possible rebooking, we recommend contacting your airline.”
