Gunman kills ‘a number of’ as he opens hearth in Kyiv road earlier than being surrounded by particular forces as he takes hostage in grocery store

A gunman has opened fire in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, killing ‘several’, the city’s mayor has said.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said several had been killed and others injured, including a child, while the assailant is still at large.

Reports suggest the gunman took refuge in a local supermarket in the Holosiivskyi area of the city, possibly taking hostages.

‘A special operation to apprehend the man who opened fire and is currently inside a supermarket is ongoing.

‘According to preliminary reports, gunshots are also being heard inside the supermarket,’ Klitschko said.

Police and special forces have been deployed to the scene and are working to detain the gunman.

Video footage shared online appeared to show a male holding a weapon, before aiming it as passersby.

One clip showed the man, dressed in a reddish jacket and dark trousers, running down a street while looking over his shoulder, carrying a gun.

Images from the scene show paramedics and other emergency service personnel rushing to the aid of the injured.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry later confirmed the gunman had been killed as attempts were made to arrest him.
