NEED TO KNOW: Brock Lesnar appears to retire after WrestleMania 42 defeat

  • Wrestling legend Brock Lesnar appears to have called time on his glittering career after losing to Oba Femi at WrestleMania 42.
  • The Beast Incarnate left his boots and gloves in the ring following his defeat in the opening match of night two. Stunned fans at the Allegiant Stadium chanted “Thank you Brock” as he stripped off his gear and sat looking emotional.
  • He then shared a lingering embrace with long-time associate Paul Heyman. The emotional scenes are widely recognised in wrestling as a sign of retirement.
  • Commentator Michael Cole dubbed Oba Femi “the next big thing” – a nickname Brock once had when he first emerged as a star. WWE’s X account added fuel to retirement speculation by posting: “Brock Lesnar leaves his gear in the ring. What’s next for The Beast?”
  • The veteran burst onto the scene in 2002 and quickly became one of the youngest WWE Champions ever. He built a reputation for overwhelming opponents with raw strength and explosive athleticism.
  • He became a multi-time world champion in both WWE and UFC and famously broke The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak. Outside the ring, he’s married to former WWE star Sable and they have two children together.
  • Later, Michael Cole said Brock Lesnar “seemingly” said goodbye to the WWE Universe, adding “if that’s the end” then he says thank you.
