Horror as woman, 12, dies after hair sucked into pool drain whereas swimming with associates

Laura Pereira Camargo, 12, was playing in a friend’s home swimming pool in Brazil when her hair became trapped in the drain and she was pulled underwater in the tragic incident

A 12-year-old girl has tragically lost her life after her hair became entangled in a swimming pool drain while she was playing with friends. Laura Pereira Camargo was underwater for an estimated five to 10 minutes at a residence in Mirassol, Brazil, last Friday (17 Apr), before firefighters managed to free her.

First aid was administered on the scene, and she was swiftly taken to an urgent care unit while in cardiac arrest; however, rescuers were able to revive her.

Laura was later moved to a hospital in São José do Rio Preto, where she was listed in critical condition. In spite of a desperate fight to save her life, she developed multiple organ failure and bacterial pneumonia.

After battling for two days, she sadly passed away on Sunday (19 Apr) evening. Her funeral and burial are scheduled to take place in Mirassol today (21 Apr), as reported by NeedToKnow.

The police have classified the incident as an accidental death and are currently examining the safety standards of the outdoor pool.

As an only child from a devoted family, Laura held a special place in the hearts of those who knew her; her parents and grandparents were deacons at the Christian Congregation in Brazil.

Laura was an accomplished piano player and had recently participated in her parents’ 20th wedding anniversary celebrations.

In a previous social media post, her father, Elias, affectionately described her as “our special gift from God”.

Tributes have flooded social media as people share their condolences and memories of Laura. A friend penned: “May the Lord give you strength in this moment of sorrow. We are with you in this time of grief and will continue praying for you.”

The news comes after we reported how a young boy was killed after being sucked into a large hot tub drain.

Matteo Brandimarti, 12, died in hospital after he was rushed there following the accident. He had been in the popular tourist city of Rimini, Italy, and tragically died five days after the horror unfolded at a hotel in Pennabilli, near Rimini, on Easter Sunday (April 5).

The schoolboy had been on holiday with his family when he became trapped underwater in the spa’s large whirlpool bath. Investigators believe his leg became stuck in one of the suction outlets, which may have been missing a protective safety grille, leaving him pinned beneath the water.
