Greggs breaks silence after in style cult merchandise disappears from cabinets
Greggs fans can breathe easy as the popular vegan sausage roll returns to stores after a brief supply shortage caused widespread concern among customers across the UK
Greggs enthusiasts were thrown into a frenzy when the bakery chain’s renowned vegan sausage roll seemed to vanish from shelves. Concerned customers took to social media en masse, alleging that the cult favourite had disappeared, with some even speculating it had been entirely withdrawn.
The alarm was raised when patrons noticed the plant-based pastry was absent from numerous stores throughout the UK, as highlighted by creatorzine.com.
Threads swiftly emerged on Reddit pages r/greggsappreciation and r/VeganUk on Saturday (18 April), as puzzled fans sought clarification.
One user queried: “Where are the vegan sausage rolls??” They continued: “My daily ritual of walking to Greggs has been RUINED by the lack of vegan sausage rolls… can anyone provide any insider information on this?”
Others chimed in, reporting similar experiences in various locations. One individual posted: “It’s the same in the Edinburgh area! Had the craving and tried 3 different outlets on my route with no avail!”
Another user commented: “Last 2 times I’ve been in two different Greggs they haven’t had any.” One person noted: “Didn’t have any or even a shelf for them in the last 2 Greggs I’ve been into.”
While another user exclaimed: “What!? This would be devastating news if true.” The sudden disappearance led some customers to claim their regular Greggs visits had been “ruined”.
However, the bakery chain has since moved to allay concerns. A spokesperson stated: “We experienced a brief interruption to supply of the Vegan Roll in some shops last week. Availability has now returned to normal across our shops.”
Since its launch in 2019, the vegan sausage roll has become one of Greggs’ most popular items, appealing to both dedicated vegans and intrigued meat-eaters.
Greggs hasn’t confirmed what caused the supply issue, however the website lists key ingredients including water, fortified wheat flour, Quorn (20%), palm oil, textured wheat protein, rapeseed oil, yeast extract, sugar, and various herbs/spices including sage and thyme. They are dairy-free, eggless, and suitable for vegans.
