A 92-year-old man charged with murdering his 87-year-old wife has appeared in court via videolink from his hospital bed.

Laurence Billam is alleged to have suffocated his wife with a pillow at their sheltered accommodation before taking an overdose, Exeter Magistrates’ Court heard

Police and paramedics rushed to the couple’s apartment in Exeter, Devon at around 12.40pm on Sunday, April 19.

Shirley Billam, 87, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

A large police investigation was launched and led to the arrest of her husband.

The white-haired defendant was represented by his solicitor Katrina Byrne, who sat next to his hospital bed.

He spoke to confirm his name, age and address.

Billam – one of the country’s oldest defendants facing such a charge – will also appear before a judge at Exeter Crown Court on Wednesday.

Devon and Cornwall police said emergency crews attended the apartment block and found Shirley dead at the scene.

They said Mrs Billam’s family is being supported by specially trained officers.

No bail applications can be made for murder charges in the magistrates’ court.

Detective Inspector Guy Biggar, who is leading the investigation, said previously: ‘We are not seeking anyone else in connection to the death and members of the public will still see a heightened police presence in the area, as our enquiries continue.’
