Update after ‘surprising’ combat breaks out in David Lloyd gymnasium in entrance of youngsters
Merseyside Police have issued an update after two men were arrested on suspicion of affray following an alleged disturbance inside the men’s changing room at a David Lloyd gym in Knowsley
Police have branded a fight that broke out inside a gym changing room as “shocking” after two men were arrested. Merseyside Police were called to David Lloyd gym on the Knowsley Industrial Estate on Arbour Lane at approximately 6.10pm on April 27.
They were responding to reports that two men had been found injured after allegedly scrapping inside the men’s changing facilities.
A 46-year-old man from Brighton-le-Sands and a 53-year-old man from Netherley were both arrested on suspicion of affray. In footage circulated extensively online, two shirtless men wearing blue shorts can be seen wrestling beside the lockers within the changing rooms while onlookers witness the violence erupting.
The duo appear to be gripping each other, with one of the men jabbing the eye of his opponent. They then seem to exchange blows before shoving each other apart.
One of the men is subsequently visible with blood streaming down his face and onto his torso, reports the Liverpool Echo.
In additional footage shared online, the bloodied man is observed talking with police officers in a separate section of the gym. One of the men is then captured in a third clip departing the gym accompanied by police officers.
A witness has since revealed to the ECHO how staff were summoned over the tannoy to the men’s changing room after the confrontation erupted.
In an update this afternoon, April 28, a spokesperson for the force confirmed both men had been released on bail with conditions. Detective Inspector Edward Barr described the incident as “shocking” since children were present in the gym at the time of the altercation.
In his statement, DI Barr also urged individuals to avoid discussing the incident on social media and instead provide any information to Merseyside Police.
He said: “This would have been a shocking incident to witness, carried out in full view of members of the public nearby, including children.
“We are gathering all available evidence and want to speak to anyone who saw what happened, or has since received information.
“Two men are in custody and we are working hard to establish the timeline of this incident.
“We are aware of social media video of the incident and I would urge people with information not to comment on such channels, but come into us directly so as not to hinder the investigation.”
A spokesperson for David Lloyd declined to comment.
