BBC host ‘hit by rest room roll’ throughout Arsenal’s Champions League conflict with Atleti

A BBC commentator was stuck with some toilet paper during the bizarre scenes ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid in Spain

There were bizarre scenes before kick off during Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid as the Spanish fans launched toilet paper towards the pitch.

From a distance, it looked like streamers – that was until, after closer inspection, those in attendance realised it belonged in bathroom rather than the Metropolitano. And one of those getting close up and personal was John Murray.

Murray was on commentating duty for BBC Radio 5 Live and as Mark Chapman passed across to him from the studio, Murray interrupted the host after a thud. Off microphone he can be heard: “Oh my goodness.”

The commentator then pics up his mic: “I’ve just been hit by the toilet roll,” sparking laughter from the pair.

And the toilet roll discussion continued into the half, with one bored X user fuming: “Commentators having a chat about toilet roll which tells you how this game is going…”

“Imagine genuinely needing a toilet paper at home and finding out this is what caused the shortage,” a second joked. As a third said: “Fletch leave the toilet roll stuff alone now!”

And another added: “Not saying this match is lacking entertainment, but Darren Fletcher and Ally McCoist are talking about toilet roll…”

The discussion continued into half-time when Jules Breach, who was pitchside for TNT Sports, discovered “around 20 yellow bags” that had been stuffed with the toilet paper that was collected from around the pitch.

However, despite the best efforts of the ground staff, players were still forced to occasionally throw toilet paper off the pitch.

And as the talk continued, one fan joked: “This has got to be the most mentions of toilet roll ever in a knock out Champions League match, and it’s only the 50th minute!”
