Thick black smoke covers UK city as locals informed ‘keep away’ as huge fireplace erupts
Emergency crews are dealing with a fire on Dock Road in Port Talbot, Wales – firefighters have warned local residents to keep their windows shut as they tackle flames
A massive blaze has erupted in a UK town with thick black plumes of smoke seen from miles around. Eyewitnesses said the fire, that broke out in Port Talbot, can be seen as far away as Mumbles.
Emergency crews raced to the scene on on Dock Road, with officers confirming they have received numerous reports of a substantial fire in the locality. Firefighters from the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are presently attending and battling to contain the situation.
In a formal statement, the service confirmed that at 3.36pm on Wednesday, April 29, teams from Port Talbot, Neath, Morriston, Ammanford, Tumble, Carmarthen, Pontarddulais and Glynneath fire stations were dispatched to the scene.
Fire personnel, assisted by teams from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, are combating a blaze involving roughly 200 tonnes of commercial waste. The incident is ongoing.
As a safety measure, locals in the surrounding area have been told to keep their windows and doors shut owing to the thick smoke. Officials have also appealed to the public to stay away from the vicinity and use different routes wherever feasible to allow emergency services unobstructed access.
Motorists are being requested to show patience while the incident is being handled, reports Wales Online.
Authorities have additionally reminded the public to only dial 999 if lives or property face immediate peril, to ensure control room staff can allocate resources efficiently.
