Two people have been killed and 11 ground crew hospitalised with serious burns a plane crashed into a hangar at an airport.
The horrifying incident has unfolded at Parafield Airport in Adelaide, South Australia, with two people already confirmed dead. Emergency crews remain at the scene where a plane crashed into a hangar, sparking a large fire and sending a thick plume of smoke over nearby suburbs.
Firefighters and emergency services rushed to the scene at 2.11pm local time and on arrival were met with a “significant” amount of smoke. The billowing smoke was seen from kilometres away. 7NEWS reported that dozens of emergency crews were called to the scene to treat the injured, with 11 ground crew who were inside the hangar at the time taken to hospital with serious burns.
Tragically, the pilot and their passenger have been confirmed as deceased. Four of the injured were rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, while seven more were taken to Lyell McEwin Hospital.
Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) chief commissioner Angus Mitchell said an investigation will be launched.
He said: “The ATSB has deployed a team of transport safety investigators from its Canberra and Brisbane offices, specialising in aircraft operations, maintenance and engineering, human factors and survival factors.
“They will arrive on site on Thursday morning, and over coming days will conduct a range of evidence-gathering activities, including site and wreckage examination, and recovery of any aircraft components of interest for further examination at the ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra.”
Chief commissioner Mitchell said anyone with video footage of the plane, or its immediate aftermath, should contact them.
Ben, a radio listener who was close to the airport, reported: “It looks like a large fire in an aeroplane hangar.
“I’ve seen multiple fire trucks going through – this is probably the fifth one now, and multiple emergency services heading out there. It’s pretty big.
“You could see the gable in the front doors of the hangar billowing out black smoke, just coming out.
“Couldn’t see flames but it was quite large – you could see some sort of fuel.”
