Horse turns up at proprietor’s funeral and nudges physique inside open casket for teary farewell
A horse was brought to the wake of her owner, Pedro Krug, who died aged 70, in Blumenau, Brazil. The mare, Nina, was led to his open coffin and let out a heartbreaking whinny as she saw him for the last time
A horse was filmed whinnying beside her owner’s coffin during his funeral wake.
The footage captures the mare, Nina, being guided towards the open casket on Monday (April 27). Upon seeing her beloved owner, Pedro Krug, lying within, she released a piercing, anguished whinny as grief-stricken relatives wept nearby.
She was then observed gently nudging the body with her muzzle, while a mourner caressed her mane in an attempt to soothe her. Pedro’s daughter, Daiane Krug Palmeira, had requested that Nina be brought to the wake in Blumenau, Brazil, enabling her to bid her final farewells. Daiane revealed to local media: “He taught her to offer her hoof (to ‘shake hands’), and he used to ask her to rest her head on his shoulder – and she would.
“In short, he had a very loving relationship with her. He was always passionate about animals.”
Pedro, 70, had been Nina’s owner for eight years, training her and nurturing her gentle nature, as reported by NeedToKnow.
Daiane explained: “One of his joys was letting children ride her. It brought so much happiness to the kids – another of his passions.”
Nina was housed in a stable at the entrance to Pedro’s property and would venture daily to a neighbouring field where she could graze.
In recent months, though, Pedro’s health declined and he ceased visiting Nina as frequently as before.
Daiane revealed: “Since he found out he had three brain tumours in November 2025, he stopped seeing Nina every day.”
Following his hospital discharge, Pedro moved in with his daughter and received care from her family. The gap between Daiane’s residence and Pedro’s home meant he went roughly six weeks without visiting Nina.
The lengthy separation concluded on January 1, when Pedro made the journey to the ranch where she was receiving care.
“After that day, he saw her twice more,” Daiane remembered. “One of those occasions was last week, when he was already extremely frail.”
Prior to Nina, Pedro had owned another horse, Pingo, for 33 years. Pingo was laid to rest beside his dwelling.
