‘HGV lorry’ crash sparks chaos as busy UK prepare line closed after automobile hits bridge

A large vehicle has crashed into a bridge in Ayrshire, Scotland, closing a major train line. ScotRail said the bridge needed to be made safe before services could resume, with trains between Glasgow and Carlisle disrupted for several hours

A major railway line has been shut after an ‘HGV lorry’ crashed into a bridge in Ayrshire.

ScotRail announced at 1.14pm on Wednesday, May 3, that a vehicle had collided with the bridge between Mauchline and New Cumnock.

The rail operator added the train line would remain closed while a comprehensive inspection was undertaken.

Services running between Glasgow and Carlisle have been disrupted, but due to extremely limited replacement transport, passengers are advised to consider arranging their own alternative travel plans.

A photograph shows a wire fence on the bridge, which appears to have been damaged in the crash. Wreckage from the vehicle can also be seen strewn across the vicinity.

Network Rail engineers rushed to the scene and discovered substantial damage, which they believe was caused by an HGV lorry or similarly large vehicle.

The location will now need to be secured before trains can operate on the line again.

It is estimated it will take at least until 10pm before this work is completed, reports the Daily Record.

A spokesperson said: “We’ve examined the bridge and identified significant damage to the parapet, which we need to remove to make safe before we can reopen the railway.

“Initial estimates are that it’ll take us until at least 22:00 to do this, though we’ll work as quickly as we can.”
