Archaeologists in Slovakia have found a creepy Stone Age mass grave of headless skeletons whose skulls were carefully removed after death as part of a mystery ritual
- Archaeologists have discovered a creepy Stone Age “horror pit” packed with headless skeletons in western Slovakia. The gruesome mass grave was found right at the entrance of an ancient town in a place called Vráble.
- Experts believe the nightmare scene might actually be the result of a bizarre and complex burial ritual rather than a prehistoric massacre. While the bones have chilling cut marks on them, researchers reckon the heads were chopped off after the people had already died.
- The ancient settlement was once home to the Linear Pottery culture, who lived during the Stone Age. This prehistoric group is famous across Europe for making unique ceramics decorated with parallel lines.
- The spooky secrets of the ditch first started coming to light back in 2022 when excavations began. That is when stunned researchers stumbled upon four pairs of headless skeletons right next to a massive grave containing another 77 bodies.
- In a creepy twist to the discovery, almost every single skeleton in the ditch was missing its skull. Out of all the remains found in the pit, only one skeleton belonging to a child still had its head attached to its shoulders.
- While the dig is still ongoing, the team’s initial hair-raising findings have officially been published. The details of the mysterious mass grave were shared with the world in the Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society.
- Scientists and historians are still completely in the dark about why these ancient people meticulously removed the skulls of their dead. They also cannot say for sure whether brutal violence played a part in how these people initially died.
- Headless corpses have popped up in other European burial grounds before, but the Vráble site has baffled experts for one terrifying reason. Anthropologists are completely stumped because the missing skulls are nowhere to be found at the site.
