The brother of a renowned Irish sports personality and ex-Premier League player is feared dead. This is after a man was shot dead in broad daylight in Spain.

Police were summoned to Carrer de Balmas in Barcelona on Wednesday morning following reports of a man being fatally shot outside a National Police office.

A forensic tent was set up at the scene as officers initiated a search for the alleged perpetrator. A CCTV image of a man believed to be connected to the incident was subsequently released. Local media suggest that the murder weapon was discovered concealed in a nearby bus stop at Placa Gal la Placídia.

The brother has been reported missing since Wednesday.

The incident occurred while Barcelona was on high alert due to a visit from Pope Leo VIX, although it is understood to be unrelated to the papal visit, reports the Irish Mirror.

A local resident in Dublin, living near the alleged victim’s parents, told the Irish Times that they are “well respected in the area”. They further revealed that the deceased’s brother had represented Ireland in his sport.

They said: “They really are lovely people as is his older brother who did his country proud in the sport which made him so well known.

“Word is spreading fast around the local community as to who the Irish man who died is.”

The Daily Star has decided not to publish pictures of a man circulating online. The shocking photos reveal a man laying dead on the floor after the shooting.

Last Sunday, another man was shot dead in the Zona Franca. According to ara.cat, police are treating this second case as a revenge killing linked to drug trafficking.
