  • A ‘stranger’ hurled a toddler into a crocodile enclosure of a zoo. The boy, 3, was rushed to hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable.
  • A 30-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The police were summoned to Johnsons of Old Hurst at 1.24pm today following reports of an incident involving an infant boy.
  • Officers confirmed that he ended up in the crocodile enclosure. The Johnsons Zoo, located near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, is a well-liked family destination.
  • Det Insp Verity McCann, from Cambridgeshire Police, said investigators believe the boy and man were ‘strangers’. He said: “At this stage we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances
  • “We do not believe the man arrested and the child are known to each other. Officers are supporting the boy’s family at hospital, and our thoughts remain with them.
  • “The boy has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital (in Cambridge) with serious injuries and is critical but stable. Specially-trained officers are at the hospital supporting the boy’s family.
