Man in 20s dies in horror road assault as boy, 16, amongst 3 arrested for ‘homicide’
A man in his 20s died in hospital after suffering serious injuries in an assault on Shields Road, Byker, Newcastle on Tuesday evening, Northumbria Police confirmed

A 16-year-old boy is amongst three people arrested on suspicion of murder after a man’s death in Newcastle. Officers were alerted to reports of an assault on Shields Road, in the Byker district of the city, at 7.25pm on Tuesday evening, Northumbria Police confirmed.
A man in his 20s sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment but passed away shortly afterwards, police stated. The force revealed that two men, aged 24 and 22, alongside the 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are being held in police custody.
A stretch of Shields Road stayed shut on Wednesday to enable investigations to proceed. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton said on Wednesday: “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are firmly with the family of the man who has sadly lost his life.
“We will offer them all of the support we can and would ask that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.”
Mr Atherton added: “We have launched a full investigation into the circumstances around the man’s death and arrested three people on suspicion of murder.
“We would like to reassure those in the local community that our officers remain in the area to carry out a wide range of enquiries to ascertain exactly what happened.
“I would also ask anyone with information regarding what took place yesterday evening to contact us.
“Your information could be of vital importance towards our investigation.”
