Nigel Farage mocked as individuals spot main downside with pub image celebrating England win
Farage was among England fans cheering the Three Lions’ victory in their opening game of the World Cup last night. But people were quick to point out one problem with the picture he posted
Delirious celebrations were held across England last night as Thomas Tuchel’s boys smashed to an amazing 4-2 victory in the Three Lions’ opening game of the World Cup. Football fans up and down the nation cheered and downed pint after pint after two goals from Harry Kane in the first half and two more from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford after the break got England’s campaign off to a roaring start.
Among those celebrating was Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who posted a picture on X, formerly Twitter, after the final whistle of himself in a pub, wearing an England shirt and happily glugging a pint, alongside the words: “Proper job. @England.” But people were quick to point out one problem.
Mirror US Political Editor Mikey Smith reposted the image with the message: “This…er. This taken tonight was it Nigel?” Another said: “Incredible that you managed to be in the same pub with the flags in the exact same place with same people next to you from the Euros two years ago.”
Social media users were quick to identify the image as having been taken almost two years ago, at The Armfield Club in Blackpool when England faced Denmark in the Euros on June 20, 2024 – not last night.
Another X user posted a series of images from the same event in 2024 along with the cheeky message: “Nigel Farage is such a man of the people, that he arranged for everyone he was in the pub with to watch England play Denmark in 2024, to get back together in the same clothes to watch England play Croatia in the 2026 World Cup. What a guy!”
Replying to Farage’s message, a different user joked: “It’s taken you two years to drink that pint, you f****** lightweight.” And someone else cheekily posted the same image with the message: “Farage celebrating the World Cup in 2030.”
Mikey added: “If Keir Starmer was caught using a picture of himself from two years ago to celebrate an England win, the backlash would probably be enough to finish him off.”
A Reform UK spokesperson said: “Yes, the picture is from 2024. After a full day campaigning in Makerfield ahead of the by-election, Nigel watched the game nearby and celebrated England’s first win (hopefully the first of many!)”
Voters in Makerfield, Greater Manchester, are heading to the polls today, Thursday, in a by-election to choose their new MP.
The match at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas was square at half-time after Kane’s two goals were met with equalisers by Croatia’s Martin Baturina and Petar Musa.
But the Three Lions came roaring back after the break, with Bellingham hitting the back of the net just two minutes into the second half, and Rashford adding the finishing touch in the 85th minute.
Posting on X after the match, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the victory as a “fantastic result against Croatia and a performance to be proud of”. He added: “On to the next one.”
England next face Ghana at Boston Stadium on Tuesday, June 23 – kick-off at 9pm GMT.
This will be followed by the final group stage match against Panama at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Saturday, June 27, which kicks off at 10pm here in the UK.
