A major UK airport has been thrown into chaos after passengers were evacuated over a bomb scare. The incident caused major disruption at Edinburgh Airport after parts of the terminal building were evacuated on Friday evening.
An explosive ordnance disposal team was called in to investigate what Police Scotland referred to as a “potentially suspicious package”, found around 6.50pm. An evacuation was initiated, a police cordon established, and roads were closed.
Police stated on Saturday morning that the incident is not being treated as suspicious. The airport announced its reopening in a statement around 3am on Saturday, pledging to restore normal services as swiftly as possible.
However, it acknowledged that the incident would cause ripple effects throughout the day. Passengers arriving at the airport on Saturday encountered long queues extending outside the terminal building.
The airport said: “Following investigations by specialist teams, the airport has now reopened.
“We recognise the frustration this incident will have caused and thank everyone for their patience and understanding – safety will always come first.
“This incident will have knock-on impacts throughout today and staff are working hard to address these and support passengers.
“Operational teams are continuing to work to restore normal services as quickly as possible.
“Please check with your airline for the latest information on your flight.”
A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated: “EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) attended and the items were made safe.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious.
“The roads around the airport remain busy and the public are asked to be patient.”
