Dog left in sizzling automotive for ‘over an hour’ throughout heatwave as window ‘smashed’ in rescue

Car windows were allegedly “smashed” to free a dog from a vehicle at a shopping centre in Leicester.

Leicestershire Police were called to the shopping centre following reports about the wellbeing of a dog in a car at 12.45pm on Tuesday (June 23).

Officers made their way to Fosse Park Shopping Centre in Grove Way, where Next and Flannels are situated.

The force confirmed they successfully extracted the dog from the car, with onlookers stating that the car windows were “smashed” to gain access.

Witnesses allege that the dog was left inside the vehicle for “over an hour” before being saved, reports Leicestershire Live.

This week, temperatures have soared above 30C as Leicestershire neared a red warning for extreme heat.

Officers have pinpointed the pet’s owner and a spokesperson stated they will refer the incident to the RSPCA.

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: “At 12.45pm on Tuesday, June 23 a report was received concerning the welfare of a dog in a car at Fosse Park.

“Officers attended and removed the dog from the car.

“The dog’s owner was also identified and the matter will be referred to the RSPCA.”
