Three suspected gang member from the criminal organisation named the “Rolex gang” have died after a police chase ended in a shootout after police attempted to stop a vehicle linked to the group
Three suspected “Rolex gang” members have died in a brutal shootout after police attempted to intercept vehicles linked to the criminal organisation.
The fatal shooting occurred on Thursday after officers acted on intelligence which linked three separate vehicles to numerous suspected “Rolex gang” members. Law enforcement pursued the vehicle leading to a high speed police chase and resulting in an exchange of gunfire between police and the suspected members of the “Rolex gang.”
The incident occurred on the Baccleuch Interchange in Johannesburg, South Africa, despite the three suspects perishing in the shootout police reported no officers were injured in the confrontation. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the operation was sparked by intelligence received about “a group of men driving in three separate vehicles around the malls and they are suspected to be involved with the ‘Rolex gang’.”
Authorities revealed Gauteng law enforcement units including the Tactical Response Team (TRT) moved quickly and identified one of the vehicles travelling along the N3 motorway.
Nevhuhulwi stated: “The Gauteng Tactical Response Team spotted one of the identified vehicles along N3. They attempted to stop the vehicle, which sped off, leading to a high-speed chase and shootout between suspects and the police.” After the high speed chase escalated, ending in gunfire, the suspect’s vehicle came to a standstill after the shooting. The three occupants of the vehicle were found dead on the scene.
While police were still processing the scene a second vehicle linked to the same group was located and intercepted. The lone driver of the vehicle was arrested after it was stopped. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi stated: “The driver who was alone in the car was arrested and will be charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.”
Multiple law enforcement units were involved in the operation ranging from the Gauteng Tactical Response Team, the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, the Gauteng Traffic Air Wing, and also private security partners. Nevhuhulwi added: “The collaboration between various law enforcement agencies and private security companies continue to produce positive results in the fight against crime.”
The Daily Star previously reported on a 21-year-old woman who was accused of planning a mass school shooting that has been ordered to stay behind bars after the FBI flagged what it called “concerning” Instagram messages.
Katherine Grace Joiner, from Wilsonville in Shelby County, Alabama, USA, is accused alongside 19-year-old Ethan Chance Bassett, from Glen, Mississippi, in a case investigators say was a tightly coordinated plot involving talk of attacking a school and then taking their own lives.
A federal magistrate judge reportedly ordered Joiner to be held in custody until trial, and found there was probable cause to support a charge of transmitting threatening communications in across US state lines. The judge, John H. England III, also reportedly ruled that bail should be refused.
