Lucas Trejo’s wife and two children have been found dead in Venezuela after the family were reported missing following the devastating earthquakes that have killed at least 1,500 people
Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo’s wife and two children have been found dead in Venezuela. Around 1,500 people have perished in the earthquakes that have ravaged the South American nation.
Amongst the victims are Trejo’s wife, Yanina Maranella and their two young children, Aaron and Ainhoa Trejo. The family were in Playa Grande when disaster struck, leading to their flat collapsing.
Trejo mounted a frantic search for his loved ones after they went missing that spanned 74 hours. In a devastating turn of events, Venezuelan football club Sport Maritimo de La Guaira confirmed the tragic news in an official statement.
They said: “Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira deeply mourns the loss suffered by Lucas Trejo’s family; we ask for respect for his relatives and teammates. After a 74-hour search, they were found deceased.”
Former Venezuela international Edson Tortolero, a close mate of Trejo, posted on Instagram to share the heartbreaking news. He said: “We inform all the people of Venezuela and Argentina that the bodies of Lucas Trejo’s family members have been found lifeless.”
“We thank everyone for the support and ask for the most sincere respect for his family at this time. WE PRAY FOR ETERNAL LIFE FOR THEM.”
Trejo has yet to speak about the loss of his family publicly, but he shared a photograph of the four of them on his Instagram Stories without any caption. Argentine media reported that Trejo’s father and brother had travelled to Venezuela to assist him in the search for his missing family.
At least 69,000 people have been reported missing since the devastating back-to-back earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday (June 24). La Guaira, a region to the north of the capital, bore the brunt of the destruction.
Among the confirmed fatalities is Venezuelan footballer Yiimvert Berroteran, 18. Venezuelan former Major League Baseball player Gorkys Hernandez’s wife, Daisy, has also died.
Defender Héctor Bello, who plays for second division club Marítimo de La Guaira, tragically lost his wife, Andrea, when their building came crashing down during the disaster. Andrea lost her life protecting their one-year-old daughter, having used her own body to shield their baby girl.
