BBC viewers rage over Wimbledon protection as main grievance issued
BBC viewers were left fuming after pundits discussing Serena Williams’ Wimbledon return interrupted the World Cup coverage, with many taking to social media to vent their frustrations over the BBC’s programming decisions
BBC viewers were left seething after World Cup pundits chose to divert attention from Norway’s 2-1 triumph over the Ivory Coast to discuss Serena Williams’ Wimbledon return, instead of concentrating on the action unfolding. Erling Haaland struck a crucial late goal to propel his country into the last 16, mere moments before the tennis legend was set to make her eagerly awaited comeback at SW19.
At 44 years old, Williams took on Australian Maya Joint while BBC2 covered the tennis action, with BBC1 broadcasting the evening’s opening World Cup fixture. Yet Gabby Logan chose to shift the discussion towards the tennis, leaving football fans watching utterly exasperated.
Supporters aired their grievances across social media, with @TMUFC posting on X: “What the h*** are they playing on bbc? ? ? ? World Cup on and we’re hearing about Serena Williams.”

The sentiment was widely shared amongst viewers, as @MutedIrish added: “BBC blabbering on about Serena Williams for 3 minutes in the middle of a World Cup game. Ridiculous.”
@350Deep similarly wrote: “World Cup going on and BBC commentating about Serena Williams? ? What the hell is going on.”, reports the Express.
Then @Christo82406026 chimed in by saying: “F*** me #BBC more interested in Serena Williams returning than commentating on the football.”
Meanwhile, countless others were left irritated that the fixture compelled viewers to switch channels, a persistent grumble throughout the tournament. During the second set at 8.30pm, presenter Clare Balding announced that coverage would be shifting from BBC2 to BBC1, following Norway’s triumph over Ivory Coast.
This news didn’t sit well with those already tuned into BBC2, who were left reaching for their remotes.
@miss_tracydav grumbled: “For the love of god bbc stop moving the tennis between channels and then waffling over it!”.
Meanwhile, @OKRJohn penned: “@bbc @Wimbledon just keep the coverage on BBC2. Bloody nuts keep changing! And bring back Sue Barker and rid of Claire Balding! ! !”.
In a similar vein, @BettyBlack74 chimed in: “@bbc @Wimbledon. Can you not just keep the tennis on bbc2 from start to finish. It’s ridiculous, keep changing channels. I appreciate there is the Iplayer but for some older people like my mam at 88 she just wants to watch tennis on a normal channel.”
