Man Utd information: Red Devils near double switch as midfield precedence shifts
Manchester United are closing in on a double transfer as Michael Carrick looks to get a midfield signing over the line after missing out on two priority targets
Michael Carrick’s Manchester United squad remains unchanged during this summer transfer window. However, they are poised to complete a rapid double swoop.
In his second spell as caretaker manager, Carrick has steered his former club to a top-four finish and has been handed a permanent position as recognition for his achievements. He will start his maiden pre-season as boss next week. Ederson is set to become a United player in the near future, though his £35million switch from Atalanta will only be finalised once Brazil’s 2026 World Cup campaign concludes.
Another midfielder is expected to arrive and a fresh report delivers a significant update on the chase for both Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba. Here, the Daily Star Sport brings you the latest transfer news from Old Trafford.

Away from transfers that impact the first-team, United are expected to sign Wales under-21 goalkeeper Kit Margetson from Swansea City.
The 19-year-old is the son of former England goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson and it is anticipated that United will need to pay a compensation fee before welcoming him to Carrington.
Yet this transfer could develop into a double deal, as reports indicate that Margetson will be loaned to an EFL club this summer to gain invaluable first-team experience. The goalkeeper joined Swansea at under-15 level but has yet to make a senior appearance for the club. He spent time on loan at Connah’s Quay Nomads during the 2025/26 campaign.
Midfield blueprint
Meanwhile, United’s pursuit of a marquee midfield addition continues after losing out on both Elliot Anderson to Manchester City and Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham. Both Crystal Palace’s Wharton and Brighton’s Baleba have reportedly been on the club’s radar for some time, but fresh reports suggest that another target will be favoured over this pair.
The Manchester Evening News reports that while Baleba was coveted by United last summer, there has been minimal progress in this window so far, as Brighton have maintained their £100m valuation despite a disappointing campaign.
Regarding Wharton, the report claims that the transfer trail has grown even colder and United consider the Palace star as too similar to Kobbie Mainoo to partner him in a two-man midfield.
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is now reportedly at the top of the club’s midfield targets and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni has also been appreciated for several months. Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha also has an admirer in director of football Jason Wilcox, who worked with him in Manchester City’s academy.
