Two ships sink after fireplace rips by means of sails with many injured in horror scenes
The Old Port of Marseille erupted into chaos on Sunday morning after a fire broke out upon one of its ships before spreading to another. Both boats sunk after firefighters were called
Two small ships have sunk after a fire ripped through both of them, with more than a dozen people injured in the dramatic incident.
A fire broke out on two ships that were docked in the Old Port of Marseille near the City Hall at around 10.30am. Both boats were ravaged by the blaze before sinking. Around 150 firefighters were called to the scene and now described the incident as “under control”.
The Mayor of Marseille said 14 people were treated by emergency services. A previous report indicated nine injured, six of whom were on board the ships, reports Huffington Post France.
In a video shared online, flames and thick black smoke can be seen billowing from the top of a ship as the fire spreads to another vessel. On the nearby gangway, several people try to flee while screaming towards the docks as witnesses call for emergency services.
The port was still closed to ferries and shuttles at 12pm.
Meanwhile, a blaze has erupted on Brooklyn Bridge following a fireworks spectacular for July 4 festivities in New York.
A live broadcast of the pyrotechnic display captured the flames with what seemed to be personnel in high-visibility gear attempting to tackle the inferno.
The spectacular fireworks show had illuminated the New York evening sky – online reports indicated that the display was suspended while the blaze was being dealt with.
It remains unclear precisely what triggered the fire or the extent of damage inflicted upon the famous landmark. Emergency vehicle lights could be observed near the flames along with what appeared to be water being directed at it in efforts to douse the fire.
The inferno is believed to be situated on the East River side.
One witness remarked: “Oh no! During the NYC America250 Independence Day fireworks celebration, reports emerged that part of the Brooklyn Bridge appeared to be on fire.
“Emergency crews are responding as officials work to determine the cause and assess the situation.”
Another commented: “The fireworks are over, but there appears to be a fire on the Brooklyn Bridge.”
