Jordan Henderson ‘devastating’ damage replace as England obtain World Cup ‘hammer blow’

Jordan Henderson was stretchered off with a suspected arm injury after celebrating England’s 3-2 win over Mexico at the World Cup and an update has been provided on his condition

Jordan Henderson’s World Cup is feared to be over after he sustained a freak arm injury while celebrating England’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico with just 10 men.

The veteran midfielder was left in considerable pain after he tripped over the advertising hoardings and landed awkwardly, with his right arm trapped beneath his body. The ex-Liverpool ace was stretchered off and given oxygen before being rushed to hospital.

An update on his condition has now been provided, with Henderson remaining in Mexico City and it’s highly unlikely he’ll play again this summer, according to our football writer John Cross.

Speaking on the latest episode of Make Football Great Again, he said: “Well, it feels like it might be [his World Cup over], to be honest.

“I know it’s a sort of a wrist, a stroke arm injury which, you know, you probably get in plaster and what have you, but that early stage is going to be difficult for him and as the team travels back to their base in Kansas City, Jordan Henderson is staying behind in Mexico City to kind of have this set and repaired.

“It feels as if it’s probably going to be his World Cup over. What an absolute hammer blow, really, because he was put up in the press conference pre-match, Tuchel clearly thinks he’s, going to say the right thing and sort of motivate the troops.

“I just thought, wow, that’s so heartbreaking. He’s such a good character and person and leader. I think that that’s absolutely devastating for him.”

The joy of victory swiftly turned to worry for Henderson at the final whistle, following a monumental effort with Jarell Quansah being sent off in the 54th minute.

Goalscorers Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham both gave their thoughts on Henderson’s situation before Thomas Tuchel provided a worrying update, confirming that Henderson had been taken to hospital.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: “Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over an injured his wrist, it looks really bad.”

When questioned about the incident during his press conference, Tuchel further added: “He injured his wrist, he’s gone to hospital it’s quite a serious injury. It doesn’t fit with the night. I don’t know if there will be a procedure.”

The Three Lions are set to return to action this Saturday when they take on Norway in the quarter-finals, following their impressive victory over Brazil.
