Man raped lady he discovered asleep on couch after breaking into dwelling

Sean Wilcox, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 18 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping a woman in her home in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, last year

A depraved rapist has been locked up after sneaking into a house and assaulting a woman while she slept on the sofa.

Aylesbury Crown Court was told how Sean Wilcox, of no fixed abode, brutally attacked his victim after slipping into a property through an unlocked door in Newport Pagnell at around 4.30am on July 26 last year.

The court was informed he had been trying to break into vehicles in the vicinity to steal belongings when he started testing doors of neighbouring homes.

Once he’d crept into the residence on Dulwich Close, he discovered the victim, a 29-year-old woman, sleeping on the sofa. Wilcox then raped the woman before escaping the property.

Thames Valley Police tracked down Wilcox and detained him on August 1. He was subsequently charged the next day.

Wilcox has now been handed a total of 18 years behind bars for crimes against the woman and numerous others carried out across the Thames Valley and Bedfordshire regions.

His jail sentence comes after he was found guilty by a unanimous jury on January 16 this year following a four-day trial, reports Birmingham Live.

He was convicted of the rape and also admitted to six counts of theft from a motor vehicle, three counts of fraud by false representation, three counts of vehicle interference, two counts of burglary with intent to steal and one count each of theft from a person, possession of class A drugs, namely cocaine and possession of class B drugs, namely cannabis.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Jessica Cooper, of Milton Keynes CID, stated: “The bravery and courage shown by the victim throughout this investigation has been admirable. No sentence will ever change the impact that this man has had on her life. However, we hope that this sentence provides her with some measure of justice.

“This was a deeply traumatic offence committed against a woman who was asleep in a place where she had every right to feel safe. I would like to commend the victim for the strength she has shown in supporting this prosecution and helping to ensure that Wilcox was held accountable for his actions.

“We remain committed to investigating all reports of rape and serious sexual offences thoroughly, supporting victims and bringing offenders before the courts.”
