You do not want cash to really feel wealthy as new research reveals what really issues

New UK research shows the most important markers of financial success and wellbeing – and it’s not about having a six-figure salary or a luxury car

Forget massive salaries and flash motors – the secret to feeling truly wealthy in life is having mates who’ve got your back, a partner who’s your closest confidant… and Sunday nights that don’t fill you with dread.

Six-figure incomes, posh cars and thousands of Instagram followers are no longer the most important signs of success, according to new nationwide research.

Instead, Britons reckon the most rewarding life is one filled with strong friendships, brilliant health and daily moments of happiness – with two thirds believing life’s little pleasures count far more than riches or social media fame.

The study, by Haribo, found that making people chuckle, having a best mate you’d trust with your life, giving a pet a joyful and safe home and having teenagers who genuinely enjoy your company are other signs you’re wealthy in life.

While being able to take a holiday each year and dining out twice weekly were seen as symbols of success, they were easily beaten by being someone who shows others compassion, maintaining good health and surrounding yourself with people who’ll always support you, reports the Mirror.

Brits now value having real friends who cheer on their wins over social media likes, while having a personal supporter is considered a better measure of success than having money in the bank. For many, the feeling of success comes from having someone to call in a crisis, children who share their daily experiences, and a partner who doubles as a best friend.

Over half believe that the definition of a rich and successful life has evolved over the past two decades, with 57% agreeing it’s now less about the balance in your bank account.

In fact, nearly nine out of ten Brits claim they already consider themselves rich in life. It doesn’t take much to boost people’s moods either, with 70% stating a small word of encouragement can entirely turn their day around.

And these tiny moments of joy aren’t confined to the home. Half of Brits say something as simple as receiving a smile or hearing a friendly “hello” during their commute makes life feel richer.

To celebrate everyday efforts and minor victories, Haribo has kicked off its “Here for a Cheer!” tour – bringing moments of recognition, little rewards and plenty of cheer to communities across the UK this summer.

Philip Murphy, Chief Marketing Officer and MD at HARIBO, said: “Success means different things to different people, but our research shows that having people to cheer you on and celebrate everyday wins, no matter how small, is what helps people feel fulfilled.

“Whether it’s reaching a major milestone, achieving a personal goal or simply making it through a tough day, everyone deserves a little recognition.”
