Brit couple preventing for lives after struggling critical accidents in lethal wildfires

A British couple is currently fighting for their lives after being rescued from a deadly wildfire in Spain after suffering serious injuries.

Simon Batchelor and Lisa Fryett were staying near Bédar and Los Gallardos in southern Spain when the blaze broke out. The pair were rescued from a mountainside the day after the fire started and remain in a critical condition in hospital.

Their three children have since travelled to Spain to be by their parents’ bedside. News of the Simon and Lisa’s injuries comes after a British couple Pete and Fran Gillam were tragically confirmed among 13 victims killed in the fire that tore through Almeria.

The couple were last heard from on Thursday (July 9) in a text message to their daughter, Danielle Gillam-Kirton, at around 7pm. The couple told their daughter that they were being forced to evacuate, but they never messaged family again. Police later confirmed to the family that the couple had died in the wildfires.

The Andalusian government also said a Brit woman, 93, was taken to hospital on Friday (July 11) after suffering burns to about 20% of her body. Her death was confirmed on Sunday afternoon, bringing the total number of fatalities from the fires to 13.

A woman who appeared on the Channel 4’s reality programme A Place in the Sun is also missing in the wake of horror wildfires, Annette Kilgore, 69, is missing and is presumed to have died in the vicious blaze that tore through their village of Bédar and razed homes on Thursday (July 9).

Now a fundraising appeal has been launched to support Simon, Lisa and their family with more than £46,000 raised to help cover emergency travel, accommodation and other expenses.

The fundraiser states: “Our family is asking for your help during the most heartbreaking time of our lives. Simon and Lisa were staying near Bédar, Los Gallardos, Spain, when tragedy struck.

“A devastating wildfire swept through the area, leaving them fighting for their lives.

“They were rescued from the mountainside the following day and are now both in critical condition in a hospital in Spain.

“When they were found, despite their devastating injuries, Simon and Lisa pleaded with their rescuers to save them because they wanted to see their children again.

“Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the emergency services, that wish has now become a reality, with all three of their children by their side in Spain.

The appeal adds: “As Simon and Lisa continue to receive lifesaving treatment, the costs of emergency travel, accommodation, food, transport and other unexpected expenses are mounting every day.

“We are raising funds to help ease the financial burden on our family so they can focus on what truly matters – being there for Simon and Lisa during this unimaginably difficult time.

The family also thanked the emergency services and local community for helping Simon and Lisa.

“We also want to thank all of the emergency services involved, especially the Guardia Civil officers, whose courage and determination against all odds helped fulfil Simon and Lisa’s wish to be reunited with their children.”
