Michael Carrick faces a busy transfer window

Manchester United are proving to be shrewd operators in the transfer market as they announced Youri Tielemans as the third addition to Michael Carrick’s squad this summer for £35million.

United have already started bolstering their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League with Andrey Santos became their opening signing of the window and his £50million transfer from Chelsea was confirmed on Monday. Backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow has been secured after his contract with Leeds United expired.

United are clearly concentrating on reconstructing their midfield and another midfield addition could be made as the club work tirelessly in the background and have made quick moves in the market. Here, the Daily Star Sport examines the latest transfer news emerging from Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay message

Since joining Napoli in 2024, McTominay has emerged as one of Serie A’s standout performers and his side’s key figure. He guided Scotland to the World Cup this summer as well, though couldn’t steer them beyond the group stages.

He has yet to return to Napoli after the tournament. Nevertheless, new manager Massimiliano Allegri has delivered him and the remaining players a pointed message, possibly suggesting that failure to comply with his principles could lead to problems.

“I learned from an old coach. Until I see and coach players, making judgments from outside is always very difficult. I’m taking it with me,” said Allegri.

“We’ll get to know each other. Values are important. McTominay and [Noa] Lang will arrive before [August 5]. It will be important to work with seriousness and professionalism and above all, to lay the groundwork for reaching March. As I always say, that’s when seasons are decided, still in contention for all our objectives: Serie A, the Champions League, the Italian Cup.”

With two midfielders through the door already at Old Trafford, transfer focus is starting to shift to other areas of the squad with former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams linked with a move to Carrick’s side.

According to TEAMtalk, United and Newcastle have both expressed interest in signing Williams, while Tottenham are also monitoring the Wales international’s situation. But the report states that sources close to the player say United particularly appeals to the 25-year-old despite coming through the Liverpool academy.

However, Forest are keen to keep Williams at the City Ground and are in talks regarding a new contract.

Herrera arrived at United in 2014 for £29m and racked up nearly 200 appearances for the Red Devils over five campaigns. He played his part in FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League triumphs before departing in 2019 for Paris Saint-Germain.

Further spells with Athletic Bilbao followed prior to his Argentine adventure and he has now penned a one-year contract with Zaragoza. He initially joined the club at age 11.

Zaragoza’s official website issued a statement confirming his arrival, which featured the declaration: “Ander’s return is an unequivocal sign of belonging and represents the return of a Zaragoza native at a crucial moment for the club’s future.”
