Reds join race for World Cup hero Torres

Ferran Torres is being targeted for a Premier League comeback if Liverpool have their way, reports the Mirror.

This follows Spain’s extra-time victory over Argentina in Sunday’s World Cup final, where the Manchester City flop netted the decisive goal in a 1-0 win.

Barcelona winger and forward Torres came off the bench to steer La Roja to victory in New Jersey, etching his name into the annals of football history. And that crucial goal could well pave the way for a summer switch to Anfield.

Paris Saint-Germain have been most strongly connected with the player, alongside Liverpool wing target Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig. Factor in that Les Parisiens already possess Bradley Barcola, the Reds’ other main objective for that role, and a confrontation appears unavoidable at some stage this summer.

Nevertheless, Torres would arrive at a significantly reduced cost compared to those alternative options given his age and the fact he’s now entered the final 12 months of his Camp Nou deal. L’Equipe has claimed Liverpool are prepared to rival PSG for his bargain signature, which is reportedly priced somewhere between £40million and £50m.

Torres, who can operate down the right wing, spent 18 months at City following a £20m move in 2020, scoring nine goals in 28 league games. He moved to Barca in January 2022 for around £47m following an injury-hit spell. Torres has netted 20 goals per season over the last two campaigns for Barcelona.

Alex Scott’s prospects of engineering a departure from Bournemouth may have improved after he rejected a new contract.

It’s understood to be the second occasion in 2026 the English playmaker has spurned fresh terms at the Vitality Stadium.

Scott, 22, developed a solid rapport with Iraola during their spell together on the south coast. The new Liverpool boss has praised the former England U21s midfielder and would hold a crucial edge in any transfer battle to secure his signature.

Sky Sports News revealed Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are also fighting Liverpool in the race for his signature.

With only two years left on his deal, this might be the perfect chance to bring Scott aboard if Iraola wishes.

The former Bristol City talent is said to be valued at £60m, with Bournemouth confronting a quandary over whether to cash in now or risk losing their prized asset for a significantly reduced sum later.

FSG have confirmed they are in talks over selling a “significant minority stake” in Liverpool to a consortium of investors led by former Queens Park Rangers owner and businessman Amit Bhatia.

The group are also backed by the Mittal family, whose net worth is reported by Forbes to be valued at more than £26billion.

Bahatia appears to be preparing for his involvement in Liverpool, with it confirmed by QPR on Tuesday that the Indian-British co-owner had left his role at Loftus Road. It brings to an end a nine-year association with the club.

He is the son-in-law of Lakshmi Mittal, the chief of ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steel and mining company, and FSG have confirmed talks are ongoing.

These negotiations are being seen like the agreement with Dynasty Equity in 2023. FSG sold a small stake in the club to the US private equity firm for £164m, with the money raised to pay down debt and help finance capital expenditure.

In a statement given to the Liverpool ECHO, FSG said: “An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”

FSG acquired Liverpool for £300m in October 2010.According to the Financial Times, a deal with the consortium led by Bhatia would value Liverpool now at more than £4.5billion.
