A 20-year-old footballer has died after losing control of his car and crashing into a pole. Santiago Nicolas Corazza, who plays for a fifth division side, was driving when he lost control of his Ford Ka.

He crashed into a roadside utility pole on Provincial Route 65 near Cervantes at around 9.30am on Sunday. The force of the impact threw him from the vehicle in Argentina’s Rio Negro Province.

He was rushed to Francisco López Lima Hospital in General Roca in critical condition. Despite the efforts of doctors to save him, he died several hours later.

Originally from Cervantes, Corazza played for Club Atletico y Social Argentinos del Norte.

The General Roca-based club competes in the regional Liga Deportiva Confluencia, which it has won three times. Corazza began his football career in the youth ranks at Deportivo Roca before later spending time in Banfield’s academy.

Paying tribute online, Deportivo Roca wrote: “We’ll always cherish the wonderful memories we shared with you, Santiago Corazza, especially those days with the 2006 team.” Police and forensic investigators have examined the crash scene to establish exactly how the accident happened.

At the time of his death, he was playing for Argentinos del Norte in the top tier of the Liga Deportiva Confluencia. In a grim twist, local reports said the rain that may have made the roads slick had already led to Sunday’s scheduled Liga Confluencia matches being suspended earlier that morning.

Corazza is survived by his parents, Pao and Oso, his sister Josefina, and his grandmothers. Police and forensic investigators have examined the crash scene and the investigation is ongoing.

This follows the death of 26-year-old football star Usalifa “Ussa” Jos Indi. He collapsed while out running.

Indi, who previously played for Portuguese giants FC Porto, passed away on July 20 while jogging alone. A passer-by alerted authorities at around 9pm after Indi reportedly felt unwell and collapsed unconscious on a road in Armil, Fafe, Portugal, the Daily Star previously reported.

When emergency responders arrived, they found the midfielder unresponsive. Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene in the Retorta area.

A post-mortem examination is yet to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death. No signs of a crime were detected, with authorities believing he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest.
