Tribute to a real footballing legend, Kevin Keegan

To celebrate the life of a true footballing legend, we have produced a stunning special souvenir tribute.

As Britain’s only multi -Ballon d’Or winner, his deeds on the pitch for Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle were legendary in their own right. But the beauty of Keegan is that he was about far more than kicking or heading a ball.

He was a man of the people, the authentic working class idol who always put the fans first and was never too busy to turn down an autograph request or, in more recent times, a selfie.

His career started as an unknown £33,000 signing from Scunthorpe United to Liverpool. There have been worse pieces of transfer business. Keegan was the kingpin as the Reds dominated British football through the 1970s, helping to inspire a whole new generation of worldwide fans as Liverpool started to turn into the global force they have become today. At the height of his powers, KK walked out of his Anfield comfort zone to play in Germany. A trailblazer again. At first his new team-mates shunned him, jealous of this big-money capture. They quickly realised Der Englander was too good to keep down. Twice, while with SV Hamburg, he won European Footballer of the Year.

Always ready for a challenge, Keegan upped sticks again to help little Southampton push for the league title with the best team, and the most enthralling football, witnessed down on the south coast. His final chapter as a player was at the other end of the country with Newcastle United, the beginning of a journey which turned him into the Pied Piper of the north-east, a man to galvanise an entire region down on its luck. He was to return as manager, giving the Toon Army what many rate as their greatest team – Ginola, Ferdinand, Beardsley, Asprilla, Shearer. ‘The Entertainers’, they became known as. Thrilling, fearless, goal-laden football which while it lasted made Newcastle everybody else’s second favourite side. You score two, we’ll get four. Wor Kev, as the Geordies called him, never did things by half. He may not have lifted the Premier League as a manager, while his 20-month reign as England boss was hardly stellar. But Keegan’s impact in the dugout can never be under-estimated. He won promotions and the league title in his first season in charge of Newcastle, Fulham and Manchester City – the only man in history to achieve such a feat. His drive, ambition and presence reinvigorated the three clubs.

You will struggle to find anybody with a bad word to say about Kevin Keegan.

This special edition covers off the many highs, and the occasional low, of a career in which Special K was the most popular footballer of his generation and then a manager the fan on the street could warm to and identify with.
