Brits settle sizzling vs chilly debate – as 52% favor chilly climate for higher sleep

The age-old debate about whether it’s better to be too hot or too cold has finally been settled by Brits – with over half favouring a permanent chill. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 52% would choose to be cold, as they sleep better (65%), detest being sweaty (63%) and become more irritable when hot (50%).

Two-thirds claim they’re unable to do anything when temperatures soar, with 22% even scrapping plans entirely during sweltering weather. By contrast, those who’d prefer to be too warm say it’s because they can don fewer layers (58%) and cut costs on heating bills (56%).

Nearly half (49%) revealed that weather is their favourite small talk subject, with the nation moaning an average of four times daily when it’s unusually scorching.

The pop-up bar kept at a refreshing temperature following research which found most Brits would rather be too cold than too hot

The study was commissioned by drinks brand Minus 196, as it launched the ‘Chiller Room’ on Clapham Common this week, a bar maintained at the ideal temperature to provide relief from the summer swelter.

The most favoured cooling strategies included sipping chilled beverages, using a fan and donning lighter garments. While around half relish cold showers and a further 42% reach for ice cream to beat the heat.

A spokesperson from the brand said: “After the recent heatwaves across the UK, we know how quickly the heat can affect people’s moods. We wanted to create a space where they can properly chill out, escape the heat, and enjoy being on the cooler side for a change.”

According to the research from OnePoll.com, 20.5°C is deemed the perfect outdoor temperature, while 15.3°C is the ideal temperature for sleeping – with 80% insisting they slumber better when it’s chilly.

During a heatwave, Brits will completely dodge exercise, household tasks, and even venturing outdoors. Meanwhile others will abandon hot beverages, cooking, or consuming warm meals. Using public transport, cuddling and dancing were a Also no-gos.

A spokesperson for Minus 196 added: “Everyone has their own way of getting through the heat, whether that’s reaching for a cold drink, sitting in front of a fan or simply avoiding anything too strenuous.

“Heat can affect everything from sleep and productivity to our social lives, meaning most feel they function better when things are a little cooler. “It’s no surprise so many people are looking for ways to stay refreshed. “.
