Inmate’s mum jailed after she took him medication disguised as chocolate in jail

The mother of a prison inmate has herself been jailed after she was caught trying to sneak nearly £3,000 worth of drugs in to her son – disguised as a chocolate bar.
Claire Evans, 40, placed a ‘chocolate bar’ on a tray while at the refreshments counter at HMP Stoke Heath near Market Drayton. She then have the tray to her son, who put the fake sugar snack in his pocket.
But a switched-on prison officer spotted the exchange and stepped in to seize the item. When prison staff opened the wrapper they discovered it contained cocaine, cannabis, cannabis resin and buprenorphine tablets.

It is estimated the drugs held an estimated prison value of £2,800, police said. Evans was arrested at the scene and later charged with four counts of conveying a listed article into prison. She pleaded guilty to the charges at an earlier hearing.
Shrewsbury Crown Court heard Evans turned up for a scheduled visit with her son on May 15 last year. On Thursday, July 30, Evans was handed a 16-month prison sentence.
Speaking after the sentencing hearing, Detective Constable Heyes, of West Mercia Police, said: “The smuggling of drugs into our prisons will not be tolerated.

“These substances fuel violence, debt and exploitation behind bars, putting both prisoners and staff at risk.
“Evans made a deliberate attempt to conceal and convey illegal drugs into HMP Stoke Heath, but thanks to the vigilance of prison staff the items were identified and seized before they could enter circulation within the prison.
“This sentence should serve as a warning that anyone caught attempting to bring drugs or other prohibited items into prison can expect to be prosecuted and face a custodial sentence. We will continue to work closely with our partners to disrupt criminal activity and keep our prisons safe and secure.”
