Chaos at main UK airport as all flights cancelled and ‘tannoy system goes down’

There is chaos this evening at Bristol Airport, with a spokesperson saying that ’emergency repairs’ required for the runway had meant all flights in and out have been cancelled

All flights in and out of Bristol Airport have reportedly been cancelled this evening (August 7), with “emergency repairs” required on the runway.

Airport Webcams wrote on X: “Airport currently closed for emergency runway repairs. Inbounds diverting to London/Gatwick, Birmingham and Cardiff.”

BristolLive reports that many who were supposed to be on flights out are trying to leave the airport while trying to book flights from other airports.

One person said: “I decided to take a bus somewhere. Still in queues to get taxis to go to London for £300 and take tomorrow morning flights. I’m trying to get to Paris but all the flights are already booked”

A Bristol Airport spokesperson said: “Due to a defect on the runway, we have temporarily suspended operations as a precaution, in order to inspect and repair the section affected. We apologise for any inconvenience. Safety is always our number one priority. Customers should refer to their airlines with any flight queries.”

Inrix reported this evening: “Bristol Airport has been closed due to emergency runway repairs with all arrivals diverting. Passengers should contact their airline for flight information.”

Paul Smith, chief executive of Bristol-based Elim Housing Association, said: “Luggage coming out though carousels but no info on which flight is on which one, it’s a bit of a jumble sale.”

Another person claimed chaos was sparked from the “tannoy system” failing.

Writing on X, they said: “All flights cancelled from @BristolAirport airport, it seems that the tannoy system had also gone down as no announcements being made and the only way to find out what’s happening is a couple of harassed @easyJet reps.”
