Suspected crime boss Daniel Kinahan touched down on Irish soil for the first time in over a decade after he was extradited following an extensive international manhunt that saw him arrested in Dubai.

The Irish Air Corps aircraft transporting the 49-year-old touched down at an airport just outside Dublin on Sunday evening, before Kinahan was brought before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin where he faced charges of orchestrating the operations of a criminal organisation before being remanded in custody at the maximum-security Portlaoise Prison.

Who is Daniel Kinahan?

Kinahan, who was raised in the Oliver Bond flats in Dublin, is the suspected head of an Irish organised crime syndicate who stands accused of operating an international drugs trafficking and money laundering empire with networks extending to Britain, Spain and the US.

The Kinahan Transnational Criminal Organisation is believed to have been founded by his father, Christopher Vincent Kinahan, during the 1990s and he was reportedly brought into the criminal enterprise. Kinahan’s relatives were connected to a vicious gang conflict with another Irish organised crime outfit.

American authorities revealed in 2022 that the feud had led to 18 killings as they announced a bounty of up to $5 million for intelligence resulting in the dismantling of the Kinahan organisation or the arrest and conviction of Daniel Kinahan.

According to the US Treasury: “Since February 2016, the (Kinahan Organized Crime Group) has been involved in a gang war with another group in Ireland and Spain, resulting in numerous murders, including of two innocent bystanders.”

Officials claim the gang trafficked tens of millions of dollars worth of illicit narcotics, including cocaine and cannabis, alongside firearms into Europe, then employed a web of seemingly legitimate businesses to clean the proceeds.

Kinahan is thought to have overseen the daily running of the gang from his headquarters in Dubai, the US Treasury said. This encompasses purchasing “large quantities of cocaine” from South America, coordinating its supply across Ireland and attempting to traffic drugs into the UK, Treasury said.

He has also directed gang associates to deliver cash to various individuals in prison, including one who was found guilty of attempting to murder someone on behalf of the organisation, the agency said. Kinahan previously operated as a boxing promoter.

His now-defunct boxing management firm MTK Global managed over 100 fighters including big names like Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton.

How was Daniel Kinahan caught?

Irish police, working alongside authorities in Britain, Spain and the US, have been tracking members of the Kinahan organisation since at least 2016, when the gang conflict resulted in a daylight shooting during the weigh-in for a boxing bout at a Dublin hotel.

David Byrne, a Kinahan cartel associate, was gunned down during the weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in Dublin. Authorities believe that Kinahan was the actual target.

He left the UK and relocated to Spain, before subsequently moving to Dubai. where he was arrested by local authorities in April on an Irish arrest warrant.

Is Daniel Kinahan married?

Kinahan wed Caoimhe Robinson in an extravagant ceremony at Dubai’s Burj Al Arab hotel in 2017. Robinson, originally from Darndale in north Dublin, is thought to have encountered Kinahan during a visit to Spain in 2014.

She has been connected in media coverage to the Kinahan network for years and security sources have characterised her as one of several partners and relatives who resided for years in what was essentially a Dubai “bubble” constructed around wealth, privacy, and separation from Irish law enforcement.

Reports indicate Kinahan and Robinson lived with their children in a seven-bedroom mansion on Palm Jumeirah, one of Dubai’s most prestigious waterfront estates. Multiple reports, including leaked property records spotlighted by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, suggest Robinson has been involved in Dubai’s property market since at least 2017.

She’s been associated with the purchase and sale of high-value properties, including a villa believed to have been bought for around €2.1 million ($2.5 million), and was also named in leaked documents as a joint owner with her husband of several Dubai properties in 2022. Irish security sources speculate that her portfolio is now worth millions of euros.

Robinson isn’t accused of any wrongdoing, but investigators suspect that the lavish lifestyles of cartel families in Dubai were funded by substantial cash and property assets.
