A 24-year-old man was pulled from the water at Camber Sands beach in East Sussex on Sunday night after getting into difficulty, as two others — a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man — safely made it out of the water

A man has tragically died after being pulled from the water at a well-known beach in East Sussex.

The 24-year-old encountered difficulties at Camber Sands on Sunday evening alongside two others, a 16-year-old lad and an 18-year-old man who both managed to get out of the water safely.

Emergency crews raced to the scene and recovered a 24-year-old man at around 7pm, and he was tragically pronounced dead. His relatives have been notified as officers boost their presence in the area while investigations continue. A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “Just before 7pm on Sunday (August 9), emergency services were called to Camber Sands Beach in Rye, after it was reported that three people had got into difficulty after entering the water.

“A large search operation was conducted and two of the three, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, safely exited the water. A third man, aged 24, was pulled from the water at around 7.30pm.

“Sadly, despite lifesaving attempts by paramedics at the scene, he was pronounced deceased a short while later. His next of kin have been informed, and our thoughts are with them.”, reports the Express.

“Enquiries in the area remain ongoing, and an increased emergency presence is visible at this time.”

A coastguard spokesman added: “At 6.37pm last night, HM Coastguard was called to an incident at Camber Sands, East Sussex.

“An HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter was sent, along with Pett Level lifeboat, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Rye Bay and Romney Marsh, Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service.”

Meanwhile, a vehicle blaze on the A31 has spread to heathland in the New Forest, with police urging drivers to evacuate and abandon their cars.

More than 20 fire engines are battling the inferno that erupted on the road just after 5.24pm on Sunday. The public made in excess of 160 calls reporting the fire on the eastbound carriageway, leading to motorists abandoning their vehicles on the road to escape the flames.

Firefighters continue to combat the fire, with the road anticipated to remain shut for the remainder of the day. The road is blocked in both directions. The westbound carriageway is closed between the M27 J2 (Ower) and the A338 (Ringwood).

The eastbound carriageway is shut between the A338 and M27 J1 (Cadnam).

Barbara, who found herself stranded on the A31 on Sunday, described the situation to the Bournemouth Echo as ‘horrendous’. She stated: “We had to pull over and stop. It was horrendous. The fire was spreading. You could feel the heat inside the car. We didn’t know what had happened and the smoke was pretty awful.”

One motorist posted online: “We were lucky. The traffic came to a standstill and the police were running down the dual carriageway and telling us to turn around immediately. It was coming towards us.”
