Man ‘mauled by shark’ on the Irish coast rushed to hospital after horror assault

A man has been mauled by a shark on the Irish coast and remains in hospital following the horrifying attack.
The Irish Coast Guard received an alert about an incident aboard a small boat south of Ardmore at 4.15pm on Tuesday. An Irish Coast Guard spokesperson confirmed the report and that a man on a fishing vessel had suffered a leg injury from a shark bite.
In a statement, a spokesperson said: “The Coast Guard’s Waterford based helicopter, Rescue 117, was tasked to the scene, as well as the Ballycotton RNLI all weather lifeboat and the Youghal RNLI inshore lifeboat.

“The man was winched on board… Rescue 117 and taken to Cork University Hospital and handed over into the care of the HSE. He’s still in hospital.”
Ballycotton RNLI confirmed it was called to launch by Dublin Coast Guard to help a five-metre pleasure craft carrying five people near Ram Head in Ardmore, after reports of someone being bitten by a shark, reports RTE.
A spokesperson revealed its lifeboat and Youghal RNLI stayed on standby while the casualty was airlifted from the boat by Rescue 117.
“The remaining members of the group did not require assistance, and the casualty vessel subsequently returned safely to Dungarvan. Both lifeboats were then stood down,” Ballycotton RNLI said.
On-duty Coxswain, Eolan Walsh, described this as a “well-coordinated” multi-agency response involving Ballycotton RNLI, Youghal RNLI and Rescue 117 working in unison to ensure that the casualty received “urgent medical assistance as quickly and safely as possible”.
“Our crew were pleased to be able to support the operation and remain on scene while the casualty was transferred for emergency treatment and we wish the casualty a full recovery.”
Meanwhile, a young girl survived a vicious shark attack that left her with 200 stitches and fragments of the shark’s tooth stuck inside her skin — all thanks to the bravery of a man who grabbed the predator by its tail to save the girl.
Elyse Frankcom was just 19 when she was attacked by what was believed to be a 10-foot long great white shark. The incident took place in 2010 off Garden Island, roughly 80 kilometres south of Perth in Australia.
Elyse was a tour guide with Rockingham Wild Encounters and had been hosting a ‘Swim with the Dolphins’ tour when her terrifying brush with death unfolded at about 12.30pm on October 30, 2010.
The teenager had been snorkelling in Cockburn Sound, an inlet of the Indian Ocean on the coast of Western Australia, and had 33 other divers, including three children, with her when she was viciously attacked by the shark which bit into her hip and left buttock. Read the full story here.
