A new documentary about Formula One icon Michael Schumacher is due for release later this year, including a rare interview with his wife Corinna discussing her stricken husband.

The seven-time world champion needs constant medical supervision following a devastating brain injury sustained in a skiing accident in December 2013. After tumbling and striking his head on a rock while skiing in the French Alps, Schumacher was put into a medically induced coma for several months before returning to his family residence on Lake Geneva the following year.

Since the incident, Schumacher’s privacy has been strictly guarded by Corinna, with only a tight-knit circle of trusted relatives and friends permitted to visit him and learn the personal details of his condition.

Nevertheless, Corinna – who wed the F1 legend in 1995 – is now poised to discuss her husband in a fresh Netflix documentary examining how he became a worldwide sensation.

‘Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend’ will launch internationally on the streaming platform on October 2 and delve into the 1994 F1 season, which stands as one of the most thrilling and crucial in motorsport history.

That campaign witnessed Schumacher claim the first of his seven World Championship crowns at the age of 25, with the craze dubbed ‘Schumi Mania’ sweeping across his homeland Germany. However, it also witnessed the heartbreaking deaths of three-time world champion Ayrton Senna and Austrian newcomer Roland Ratzenberger at the San Marino Grand Prix, compelling F1 chiefs to implement extensive safety reforms.

The upcoming documentary will also address the extensive accusations of cheating and race manipulation directed at Schumacher’s Benetton squad throughout that campaign.

Several of Schumacher’s inner circle and prominent F1 personalities have participated in the documentary, including former Benetton boss Flavio Briatore, ex-F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and retired racer David Coulthard, alongside the German legend’s former manager Willi Weber.

Yet Corinna is anticipated to offer exclusive glimpses into her bond with her husband and explore their lasting romance. Whether she will provide any fresh information regarding Schumacher’s health status remains uncertain, having maintained strict secrecy since the devastating incident of 2013.

In an earlier Netflix documentary chronicling the iconic driver’s career, released in 2021, Corinna revealed that her husband was “different, but here”. Their son Mick, meanwhile, noted that he and Schumacher “understand each other now in a different way”.

Last year, prominent F1 journalist Felix Gorner, who maintains close ties with Schumacher’s family, disclosed that the seven-time world champion can no longer speak. “The situation is very sad,” he stated in March.

“He needs constant care and is completely dependent on his caregivers. And he can no longer express himself verbally.

“Currently, there’s a maximum of 20 people who can approach Michael. And, in my opinion, it’s the right strategy. Because the family is acting in Michael’s best interests. They’ve always strictly protected his privacy, and that hasn’t changed.”
