Manchester United endured a disastrous opening to the new Premier League campaign after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Hull on Saturday afternoon.

United entered as overwhelming favourites on the season’s first day, yet the newly-promoted outfit held a commanding two-goal advantage at the interval courtesy of strikes from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy.

Senne Lammens, 6 – Produced several fine stops in the opening 45 minutes, denied a well-directed header from Oli McBurnie, though he was powerless to prevent either goal. It said everything that Lammens emerged as United’s standout performer on the day, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Noussair Mazraoui, 3 – Dealt with threatening situations to thwart a dangerous delivery in the first period, yet he surrendered possession repeatedly and appeared exposed defensively. Carrick might turn to Diogo Dalot for next weekend’s fixture.

Harry Maguire, 4 – Appeared to be the sole defender capable of handling Hull’s robust approach and high balls at various stages. Attempted to inspire his side’s comeback in the latter half, which witnessed him venture forward out of desperation.

Ayden Heaven, 3 – Engaged in a heated exchange with McBurnie as the sides headed down the tunnel at the break, seemingly claiming he was fouled for the opener. Nevertheless, he was overpowered and ought to have performed better.

Luke Shaw, 4 – Although Shaw was solid defensively, he offered little in an attacking sense. If he lacks the energy to contribute going forward against Hull, he’ll find it even tougher against superior opposition this season.

Andrey Santos, 3 – Started brightly, calling for the ball from his colleagues, but he committed some unnecessary fouls and appeared careless on several occasions. Not the competitive debut he was hoping to make for United.

Youri Tielemans, 3 – Should prove to be a superb signing, but he failed to reach the standards he’s capable of against Hull, like every other United player. Appeared sluggish and didn’t deliver as many progressive passes as anticipated.

Bruno Fernandes, 3 – Tried a weak effort from 30 yards outside the area out of frustration in the second half. Appeared fatigued at the World Cup and may endure another sluggish start to the campaign judging by his showing against Hull.

Bryan Mbeumo, 5 – Appeared the most threatening of the attacking players in the first half, though that wasn’t particularly impressive. He wasn’t as influential in the second half when Rashford entered the fray.

Matheus Cunha, 3 – Didn’t appear at ease operating centrally, and United will be hoping Benjamin Sesko can adapt as swiftly as possible.

Patrick Dorgu, 3 – Had three attempts by the break, which was more than any other player, but he lacked precision. Was predictably substituted at half-time for Rashford.

Subs:

Marcus Rashford, 5 – His first action was a defensive header, followed by a powerful dash down the left flank to secure a free-kick. Rashford was met with thunderous applause from the away supporters as he readied himself to enter the fray.

Kobbie Mainoo, 5 – He managed to retain possession, which marked an improvement.

Benjamin Sesko, 5 – Served as a target man, but his teammates failed to carve out any opportunities.

Diogo Dalot, 5 – A step up from Mazraoui.

Shea Lacey, 5 – Didn’t have much of an impact.
