Ex-Championship star, 25, tragically dies after collapsing on pitch throughout pleasant
A former Championship star has tragically died at the age of 25 after collapsing on the pitch during a friendly match in Portugal on Saturday morning
Former West Bromwich Albion star Quevin Castro tragically passed away at the age of 25 on Saturday morning after collapsing on the pitch during a match in Portugal.
Reports indicate that the central midfielder had only been on the pitch for 10 minutes for Real Massama against Estrela de Amadora when he suddenly fell to the ground. Medical teams from both clubs immediately rushed onto the pitch to aid Castro, with A Bola reporting that a defibrillator was utilised. Sadly, all attempts to revive the 25-year-old proved unsuccessful.
Emergency medical personnel were also swiftly on hand to administer treatment, with Castro being rushed to hospital. Despite the valiant efforts of the medical team, Castro was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The fixture between Real Massama and Estrela de Amadora was subsequently suspended, with the latter club issuing a statement confirming the heartbreaking news. It read: “Estrela da Amadora hereby expresses its deepest sorrow for the passing of Quevin Castro, player for Real Massama.
“At this moment of profound sadness, Estrela da Amadora extends its most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Quevin Castro, as well as to the entire Real Massama structure. Our thoughts are with all those close to him. Rest in peace, Quevin.”
A host of others also took to social media to post tributes to the midfielder. Lucha Libre wrote: “We regret to inform of the passing of Quevin Castro at the age of 25.
“Quevin Castro, who played for West Bromwich Albion, tragically passed away after suffering a health issue during a preseason friendly match between his club, Real Sport Clube, and Estrela da Amadora in Malveira, Portugal.
“In the 10th minute, he indicated that he felt unwell. He passed away. He did not arrive alive at the hospital. Our condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.”
Another user penned: “I used to be a big fan of Castro, used to post loads about him back in 2021 when we signed him. Horrible news to hear, my thoughts and prayers go out to all of his friends and family. Rest in peace Quevin Castro.”
A third commented: “Former West Bromwich Albion player Quevin Castro has passed away aged 25. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family during this extremely difficult time. RIP, Quevin.”
Castro’s former club Eastbourne Borough also posted: “#EBFC are devastated to learn of the passing of former player Quevin Castro. Our thoughts are with Quevin’s family during this extremely difficult time. Rest in Peace, Quevin.”
Meanwhile, West Brom also paid tribute to their former player, writing: “West Bromwich Albion are devastated to learn of the untimely passing of Quevin Castro, aged just 25.
“Albion will pay tribute to Quevin on Sunday, with a period of applause in the 25th minute of the fixture against Burnley. James Morrison’s men will also wear black armbands. Quevin joined the Baggies as a teenager in 2021 and went on to make his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal.
“He made his maiden league outing for the club in February 2022 and scored in the Premier League Cup final triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers three months later. Castro later had loan spells at Burton, Notts County and Gateshead, before departing The Hawthorns in the summer of 2023.
“After leaving Albion, Quevin spent time at York City, King’s Lynn, Chippenham, Cambridge City and Eastbourne, before returning to his native Portugal, where he died on Saturday. The thoughts of everyone at Albion are with Quevin’s loved ones at this desperately sad time.”
A graduate of the Sporting CP youth setup, Castro penned his first professional deal with Thetford Town in 2017. He subsequently had spells with Mildenhall Town, Leiston, Bury Town and Norwich CBS before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2021.
Castro remained with the Baggies for just two years, before transferring to York City in 2023 and Cambridge City in 2025. He linked up with Eastbourne in March, before later moving to Real Massama.
