Donald Trump has floated renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself after claiming it is now “under U.S.A. control”.
The US President made the suggestion in a post on Truth Social, proposing the name “TRUMP STRAIT” and saying it would be “hotter” than ever before.
Trump wrote: “Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???
“Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
It comes amid a fresh escalation in the conflict between the US and Iran. American forces carried out new strikes on Iranian military targets on Tuesday, before Tehran responded with attacks on US bases and other American assets across the region.
Trump has previously claimed the US has “total control” of the Strait. Iran has rejected that assertion and says its own forces have “full control”.
A US naval blockade has also sharply reduced Iranian crude oil exports through the Strait, with shipments heavily restricted since mid-July.
Shipping through the area has remained disrupted during the conflict, with tensions around the Strait continuing to affect vessels passing through the region.
