A building has collapsed after it sustained “major damage” in a collision with a van, police have said.

Greater Manchester Police’s traffic unit shared a photograph showing a scene of devastation. A major junction in Bolton remained closed to traffic on Monday morning (September 7) in the aftermath of the incident.

Police have confirmed that the building – understood to be an estate agent – was empty at the time and there have been no reports of any injuries. A man was arrested at the scene just after 2am on Monday, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The junction of St Helens Road and Morris Green Lane in Bolton remains closed as a result, according to the police.

The image shows a near total collapse of the building, with bricks strewn across the road and the roof caved in as investigators attended the scene.

In a statement, police said: “At 2.10am this morning (Monday 7 September 2026), we were called to report of a road traffic collision on St Helens Road in Bolton.

“Officers attended the scene and located that a van had collided with a building which has caused significant damage to it.

“A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion failing to provide [a specimen of breath] and remains in custody. Investigations are ongoing.”

Writing on Facebook, GMP’s traffic unit confirmed the closure. The police stated: “The junction of St Helens Road and Morris Green Lane is currently closed due to major damage sustained to a building after a road traffic collision. If you usually go this way, please plan an alternative route leaving enough time.”
